'Hybrid' originates from an intervention that is at once playful and unsettling: the “piercing” of plants. Driven by an impulse toward anthropomorphization, Baeckelandt appropriates living organisms by inserting eyelets into them, an act that recalls bodily and textile modifications. The result oscillates between aesthetic appeal and discomfort. The work exposes an underlying tension in the human relationship with nature and can be read as a metaphor for a parasitic dynamic, while also alluding to natural processes such as insect feeding traces.
